Prague: Essential Tips for First-Time Visitors

You’ll have heard a lot about Prague from other travellers. Virtually everyone who visits says the same thing: this is a city that’s easy to love. It’s medieval, walkable, and full of culture — everything you’d want from a European city, basically. Throw in the fact that it was one of the few major European cities that didn’t have to be rebuilt after World War II, and you really have what amounts to a wonderfully unique city.

So if you’ve been looking for a sign that you should visit Prague, well, here you have it. We’ve even put together a few handy tips that’ll help you to get the most from your first — but likely not your last — trip to the Czech capital.

Plan Your Trip For At Least a Few Days

One of the joys of visiting European cities is that you can realistically be there and back in the space of a weekend, which means there’s no need to use that all-too-precious holiday leave every time you want a getaway. Still, while there’s a time and space for those Friday evening — Sunday evening trips, a first-time trip to Prague deserves a little more. This is a city that’s jam-packed with history and is endlessly explorable. Book a couple of days off work, and aim to stay for 4 – 5 days.

Stay Away From Old Town

When we say ‘stay,’ we mean ‘sleep.’ You’ll absolutely want to visit Old Town; in fact, it’s where you’ll be for the majority of your time in Prague, since that’s where the majority of the city’s major attractions are located.

But staying there is a different story. Booking your accommodation elsewhere — Prague has plenty of distinct neighborhoods — gives you a chance to see another side to the city and get the peace and quiet you need to sleep well. Old Town is charming during the day, but it can be quite raucous at night.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

Prague is routinely regarded as one of the world’s most walkable cities. You can walk pretty much everywhere, and in some cases, you can only walk. Many of the streets in Old Town are pedestrian-friendly. When you’re planning your trip, keep this in mind and bring comfortable footwear.

You’ll also need to think about what you’ll do with your luggage before/after check-in, since the cobbled streets are a nightmare to navigate with heavy (or even light) roller bags. Using a luggage storage Prague service will allow you to walk/explore in peace. It’s also recommended to take breaks from walking throughout the day — it’s easy to get carried away when you’re having fun, but your feet will thank you for the rest.

Get Up Early

Save the lazy mornings until you’re back home. Prague rewards early risers. Getting up pronto will allow you to explore the city with much fewer crowds, which can make for a more enjoyable experience. Plus, breakfast in Prague can be oh so delicious — take a walk, stop in a cafe, and you’ll have made a great start to the day.
